Who: Fez from London, England. What: A four-piece who I’ve just been introduced to, starting to get some reactions online. I couldn’t really find a bio online, or more about the band instead of listing the four players. Perhaps we should just start with a killer tune (in the one below)? Song: Lowlight. For the fans of dream-pop, shoegaze or artists like M83, you’re probably going to like what I’ve got from Jatun’s newest release: (Blanket of Ash, out March 9 on Other Electricities). With filled walls of clandestine vocals, heavy layers and unmistakable intensity, this vinyl-only collection of metallic drone will fill your ears and help you drown out the outside world. Try on Circuit Eater. Hear more on the e-card.

Here’s the newest from Psych rockers The Secret Machines. Like I Can is the new single, which is available everywhere today digitally along with another singled titled “Terrible Light” via the band’s own label – TSM Recordings. Both tracks were recorded at The Magic Shop and mixed at Electric Lady in NYC. Written by Brandon Curtis as a conversation between him and himself, Like I Can features signature TSM heavy and synchronous bass and drums. Strings are a nice touch. Who: The Heligoats from Bellingham, Wash. What: Today is one of those days where there’s just too much good music out there. From the new album Goodness Gracious (out today, Greyday Records), this Chris Otepka (formerly of Troubled Hubble) in his tenth year with The Heligoats. Always using the moniker as a separate songwriting outlet, even while touring and recording with other full-time well-acclaimed bands, he’s steadily created a record ever year since the beginning. Impressive and a great song below. Song: Fishsticks. Reminds me of Mumford and Sons, meets Wintersleep, meets Bishop Allen. Filed under: Mobile Comments: None |

Who: The Soft Province from Montreal and Regina. What: From two music minds and longtime friends (and Besnard Lakes co-founders), Jace Lasek and Michael Gardiner are The Soft Province and this in an introduction to their new body of work, 45 atmospheric minutes in their self-titled debut. ‘Drawing on Mike and Jace’s love of the pop song and long repetitive drones, the album spans the distance between the concise pop song structure of Francoise Hardy and the psychedelic organ drones of Broadcast’. The press release could have just said original Besnards…. and I probably would have posted it… Song: One Was A Lie. Filed under: Mobile Comments: None |

Coming up later this month is the Wavelength 10th Anniversary Festival; marking 10 years and 500 shows of the weekly music series founded a decade ago by a loose collective of independent musicians who wanted to create a regular meeting place to expose local artists to new audiences and generate more excitement about Toronto’s then-overlooked independent music scene. With a mandate to encourage cross-pollination by putting acts from different genres onto the same bill, to nurture a sense of community and co-operation between artists, and to make indie music accessible through a Pay What You Can admission price and a print zine that interviewed the bands playing the series, Wavelength launched on Sunday Feb. 13, 2000 at now-defunct College street club Ted’s Wrecking Yard, with a show by Mean Red Spiders and Neck, two pioneers of the ‘90s T.O. indie sound that were also affiliated with the “Wavelength Crew.” For the 10th Anniversary milestone, Wavelength 500 expands to a record five nights at five different venues, with five bands playing each night. With 10 years, 500 shows and over 1100 bands to look back upon, Wavelength 500 is not just a best-of-the-year but also a best-of-the-decade fest. With a 100% homegrown line-up, Wavelength 500 is a living, breathing time capsule of Toronto indie rock in the 2000’s. WAVELENGTH 500 Wednesday, Feb. 10th @ The Music Gallery, 197 John St. Thursday, Feb. 11th @ Steam Whistle Brewery, 255 Bremner St. Friday, Feb. 12th @ Sneaky Dee’s, 431 College St. Saturday, Feb. 13th @ SPK / Polish Combatants Hall, 206 Beverley St. Sunday, Feb. 14th @ The Garrison, 1197 Dundas St. W.
